the dot

Description: For Dot Day which is in September we read the book "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds. This book is about a young student named Vashti who thought she could not draw. While she was sitting in art class she had an empty paper and was frustrated that she couldn't draw she then put just a dot on her paper. The next day she came into the classroom and saw her dot hanging in a gold frame this encouraged her to keep creating dots. We then created our own dot using a coffee filter, markers, and watercolors.

Extension Activity:  An extension activity that can be done with this art activity is for reading comprehension. You can have students retell the story. Students will create little flashcards of major events throughout the book and have dots on each flashcard. Then students will retell the story through flashcards.
