Link: Elements and Principles of Design
Description: This activity has students go out in the community and take pictures of a specific type of design. In this activity, we took 12 pictures of 12 different designs: lines, shapes, textures, space, value, color, balance, movement/rhythm, contrast, unity/variety, emphasis, and pattern. Then we came up with grade-appropriate definitions for each design.
Extension Activity: An extension activity that you could use to help teach critical thinking could be storytelling through art. Students will come up with a real story or a made-up story to draw and color about. This makes students critically think about the character development, plot, and visuals that may help show what the story is about. Then when the student shows the teacher their story the teacher may ask the student to explain their artwork. The student will critically think about what each drawing represents and tell the teacher the story through artwork.
